Summary
Steve wasn't always alone.
There had been a time in his early childhood that he had someone who watched him, took care of him, and made him feel special. It had started with weekend visits to his grandfather's house when his parents had events to go to for his father's work. But as Steve got older, and his parents' already little attention went almost completely away, he ended up practically living at his grandfather's house. Little Steve didn't mind, not at all.
Most people would question just how much fun a young boy could have with his grandfather, a World War II veteran. Steve had the time of his life.

Summary
There were very few things that Steve ever kept from Oatie growing up.
He kept some of his struggles in school to himself. He didn't divulge much of his romantic interests other than he had been dating. He didn't share just how big and lonely his house felt when his parents left. He was pretty quiet about how he had gained the King Steve moniker around school - he wasn't exactly proud of that one and knew deep down at Oatie would be disappointed.
Steve considered those things to be more omissions of the truth and not so much lying or hiding. There were only three things that he worked to keep secret from Otis Harrington.
1. Everything that had happened involving the Upside Down and Russians.
2. The time his dad had actually hit him.
3. His struggles with his own sexuality.Series

Summary
It was simple for Steve to slip into helping others. His grandpa Oatie tried repeatedly as Steve was growing up to show him love and affection in other ways to try and pull some of the weight from his small shoulders. Otis Harrington knew that his grandson wasn't born to the more caring of individuals; he often struggled with himself when he sent small Steve back home about where exactly he went wrong as a parent for his son to be such a fuck up as a father.
Otis Harrington was a big proponent of simply spending time with the people he cared about; He hadn't been raised on much and the best way to show people he cared was to be there for them. Sometimes, he doted on his loved ones with surprises. Usually something small and thoughtful. Steve had seen it a lot growing up, both facets of his grandfather's love. He'd spent many afternoons sitting and doing puzzles with his Oatie. He'd also hide his grin as he smuggled little candies back into his parents' house that Oatie tucked into his pockets.
Thankfully, as Steve got older and he fostered his own family circle out of his group of friends he found it to be easier and easier to show his love in different ways.

Summary
Otis Harrington taught Steve a lot without ever really meaning too as well. Growing up, Steve worshiped the ground Otis walked on. He watched him closely, wanting to be just like him. It may have taken some time, and some ass kicking, for the real lessons to kick in. But Steve was sure that Oatie was proud of him and the man he'd become.
One observation Steve made very early in his life was the kind of sadness that settled in Otis when the hot summer days faded into brisk autumn mornings. When he was much younger, Steve had no idea why and he was too afraid to ask. But one night when he was about six or seven he snuck down to the kitchen at Oatie's house to find his grandpa sitting up at the table.
