Summary
At first, Alva couldn’t help but wonder if this was a joke, and a particularly cruel one at that. The young man was the spitting image of Herman a decade ago, when they had been in university—same eyes, same jawline, same wide smile that invited someone in. If he hadn’t looked just above the age of majority, Alva would have sworn he was seeing a ghost. He couldn’t recall Herman having any younger nephews or country cousins, and yet here the young man stood, wearing Herman’s face as if to taunt him.
The young man held out a hand, giving him that wide awful smile Alva missed so dearly. “Hello sir, I’ve heard so much about you—and your work, of course! My name’s Balsa, Luca Balsa, and I’m so keen to hear more about your theories of perpetual motion.”

Summary
Alva approaches through the wide chapel doors. His steps are slow and precise—there’s no need for him to rush, after all. Luca feels sweat drip down his spine. Alva stops less than a meter in front of him. His posture is as perfect as the shadows in Luca’s memories, and he looms just as large.
“Balsa,” he says, crisp and dripping with disdain.
“Lorenz,” Luca says, pretending his voice doesn’t waver. He knows Alva hears it anyways.
“You really are here. I thought the others—the hunters, was it? I thought they might have been misleading me.”
