At first, Alva couldn’t help but wonder if this was a joke, and a particularly cruel one at that. The young man was the spitting image of Herman a decade ago, when they had been in university—same eyes, same jawline, same wide smile that invited someone in. If he hadn’t looked just above the age of majority, Alva would have sworn he was seeing a ghost. He couldn’t recall Herman having any younger nephews or country cousins, and yet here the young man stood, wearing Herman’s face as if to taunt him.
The young man held out a hand, giving him that wide awful smile Alva missed so dearly. “Hello sir, I’ve heard so much about you—and your work, of course! My name’s Balsa, Luca Balsa, and I’m so keen to hear more about your theories of perpetual motion.”
