Summary
"“Behave yourself, asshole,” the guard says—though Butcher’s hearing is somewhat muddled—and Butcher heaves in breath after breath. His eyes are closed, and for now, he keeps them that way—opening them just makes black spots cloud his vision, and even the dim light in the room knocks the pain even higher.
He hears a gunshot, but it sounds like it’s from somewhere behind the door. It’s got to be Hughie’s doing, he thinks, then somewhere in the back of his mind springs forward the thought, my guardian angel.
Butcher almost snickers at the thought."One shot. On a mission--by himself--for the FBSA, Butcher gets himself knocked unconscious and tied to a chair.
Well, at least Hughie knew his location, and now that he's tied up, that'll certainly help--but he can get himself out of it without Hughie, right?

He’s looking at Butcher like he’s a goddamn apparition that’s gonna disappear any second, because yeah, he’s still not a hundred percent certain that that isn’t what this is. A hallucination, a ghost-sighting. “You’re alive.”"One shot. A semi-undercover mission for the FBSA goes wrong, and Hughie and Butcher are held captive.

“It—it won’t—” It won’t fix it, Butcher thinks, since Hughie won’t say it. It won’t save your life. “It could help you feel a bit better, maybe? You don’t have to, it—it was just a thought. Sorry.”"One shot. Set sometime post-season 3. Butcher’s health is deteriorating, and Hughie knows it. As a sort of routine, now, Hughie and Butcher meet up to sit together on a particular park bench.

“Butcher pulls out his phone, setting it on the table. He eyes it, just staring at it.
The whiskey starts to take effect, slightly dulling the pain in his mind and body alike, and the idea of calling Hughie sounds better and better every time he raises the whiskey bottle to his lips yet again.
He’s not sure how much he’s drank or how much time has passed when he picks that phone up and calls Hughie. It rings once, twice, and then Hughie answers.
“Hello…? Butcher?””One shot. Butcher follows through—alone—on a lead for information on Homelander that he knows seems pretty suspicious, and he gets himself hurt. He makes it back to his place and does a half-hearted, shoddy job at patching himself up, then gets drunk.
He already wanted to call Hughie, but maybe the whiskey makes it just a bit easier.
