“Hey,” Barty whispers, and that is fine too, Evan would rather fill the silence with something. He turns his head to face Barty and—he can feel Barty breathing softly, their lips are inches apart and there is something Evan cannot identify shining in his eyes. But all of this is swiftly pushed to the back of his mind when Barty leans closer, just a bit; their lips still aren’t touching but Evan can taste the discomfort in the back of his throat, feel it pooling in his stomach. He does not want to kiss Barty like this, doesn’t want it to be casual in a way he isn’t sure he can fake.
Because Evan doesn’t want it to be casual. Not with Barty; Barty is too much and just enough at the same time and if Evan kisses him, it is not going to be when they’re both pissed and locked in a closet in some abandoned classroom too late on a Saturday.
