It was only customary. On their 16 birthday, all merfolk held a traditional ceremony that varied around the world but there was one thing that stayed in common; the coming up for the first breath of air.
When Chase rose for the first time, he felt so complete that he kept coming back for more(Or at least that’s what he tells himself whenever he does rise up so that his mother won’t kill him if he’s caught. At least his brother might leave him alone if he reasons it somehow)
But either way he fell in love with the feeling and something more.

Kylie Gutierrez was in love with Chase Almasi and the only way to get her cake and eat it too was to love him as much as she could, make herself as lovable as she could before she left him. Become the perfect girl on a night out just for him.
It was better to love and leave for her than to wait around and ruin him by accident. She was never good enough anyways.
Now if only Chase knew that. Because he refuses to stop looking at her with these eyes that plead to be held forever.
