Summary
This takes place in the book directly after the part entitled "Madeleine: 1831-1840". Erik's dog Sasha just died; Erik tried to defend her and got wounded. His mother, Madeleine, speaks with the doctor about sending Erik away. Madeleine refuses and realizes that she loves Erik, and makes a resolution to burn all his masks, but when she wakes up in the morning, Erik has run away.

Summary
This story begins as if everything before it in Susan Kay's Phantom had happened, of course disregarding the existence of "Madeleine", the first story of this series.
This part takes place before the end of the section entitled "Erik 1840-1843". Erik has been captured by the Gypsies but is now afforded some measure of fear and respect. Javert has threatened him, but no more than that. Erik comes to understand the concept of desire, and, realizing he will always be alone, contemplates killing himself. After he decides against it, he hears a Gypsy girl crying in the woods. He goes to investigate and finds Duchina, whose ankle is twisted. When Erik tries to help she faints, but when she comes to the begin to have an almost normal conversation.

Summary
This takes place just before the end of the section entitled: "Giovanni, 1844-1846". That morning, Luciana, in frustration, destroyed some of Erik's inventions in the basement. Erik, in a rage, left, and Luciana wondered to her father why Erik didn't like her. Giovanni started to explain it had to do with his appearance, but Luciana insisted she didn't believe what people were saying about Erik. She said she was going to find out what was under his mask, and everything comes to a breaking point when she's on the roof, demanding Erik remove the mask, and Giovanni overhears.

Summary
This takes place just before the end of the section entitled: "Giovanni, 1844-1846". Luciana says she's going to find out what was under his mask, and everything comes to a breaking point when she's on the roof, demanding Erik remove the mask, and Giovanni overhears. Giovanni finally tells Erik to take off the mask; Erik does; Luciana (that witch!) screams, falls off the roof, dies. Giovanni goes downstairs to bring her body into the house.
