“War makes assets out of everyone,” says Claude and if it weren’t for his gentle tone, Lysithea would’ve exploded. “Friendships take a backseat. Which is why, some people, you keep far and away. And the ones you can afford to lose, as horrible as that sounds, you keep as close as you can. Do you—” he almost grimaces. “Do you get what I’m saying?”
Not really. Claude always had a way of looping words around themselves until she couldn’t tell the beginning from the end. But there it is, that awful smile of his, barely concealing the emptiness of his gaze.
He never looked at her that way before.
