Lucy stepped through the doorway to the Orpheus Society’s reading room and felt her breath hitch, like a hand was squeezing her lungs. She was ambushed by a vivid memory of the last time they had stood in this room, when Penelope Fittes had offered a semi-hostile takeover of Lockwood & Co. They hadn’t known who she really was at the time, of course, but they had all bristled at the offer. Lockwood had rejected it out of hand, politely and with aplomb, as was his way. They had been blissfully unaware of how lucky they were to have gotten out of the room with their lives. And their souls.

George sighed as he trudged up the steps and unlocked the front door. Maybe he should just hide in his room for the rest of the night and ask Holly or Kipps in the morning if they had any idea what was going on.
George heard a click as his key turned over in the lock and he pushed through the front door into the dimly lit front hall. He stepped on something odd shaped on the floor, rolling his ankle slightly. He cursed and looked down to see what it was. That was when he noticed that the temperature had dropped several degrees as he crossed the threshold. A panic gripped him, making the world seem to move in slow motion as he raised his head and stared into the ghostly face of Julius WInkman.

“It’ll be fine, I promise,” Lockwood said, running his hand up and down my arm in a soothing way.
I glowered up at him.
“Trust me,” he said. He flashed his megawatt smile and I sighed. There was no arguing with that smile. He kissed me on the forehead and then was off, bounding up the stairs.
I watched him go, butterflies and anxiety bees going to war in my stomach.

Lucy sat on the plush sofa, plucking at her skirt as she settled into the surprisingly comfy seat. The woman across from her smiled warmly, a pen and clipboard at the ready, legs crossed primly in a way that made Lucy think of Holly.
“So Lucy,” Dr. May began, “I’d like to get to know you a bit better. Do you mind if I ask you some standard intake questions? If there’s anything you don’t feel comfortable talking about right now just say “pass,” alright?”
Lucy nodded. This wasn’t her first haunting, as the saying went. “Sure.” She shrugged. “My life is an open book.”
“I suppose it is."
