Summary
Mara recently joined the LAFD, leaving behind a past she'd rather forget. Raised in a small Utah town, she was born different and wanted something more than becoming just become a wife.
Bobby Nash is content enough. In an on again off again relationship with Athena Grant, he finds inspiration and joy in the little things of each day. Still, he sometimes feels like something is missing.
The 118 hires a new probie with a glint of risk taking in her eye and just enough foolishness to fit into the 118. She faces every obstacle with her team, growing along the way.
Circumstances end up making Mara and Bobby each other's confidants, and slowly they grow into something more. An unspoken bond that haunts them both, until one day the coil inside both of them finally snaps.
(For all my Bobby + Athena fans, she gets a follow up story that goes along with this one because I adore her and think she would make an amazing match with another cop. The story will follow her reorganizing the LAPD into the best police department in the country, and one that is a role model for officers everywhere. My plan is to have her shatter the glass ceiling!)

Summary
Two years have passed since the end of "The most Unexpected Thing".
Bobby and Mara are parents to a now two year old Izzy with a second baby on the way. Mara has been promoted and Bobby made the decision to take a step back after being injured during a bridge collapse. As Mara continues to climb the ranks, she continues to grow as a person, a mother, and as a partner. Bobby is enjoying retirement. He gets to spend time with his daughter and soon will be a father once more.
Life with one child and another on the way can be a shitshow. But it's their life and for the first time, both Mara and Bobby are truly content. Life is pretty damn good for the Nash family.
Until an unexpected person from the past rears there head, which only leads to the discovery of a web that puts all of the Nashes at dire risk.

Summary
Alternative Universe of "The Most Unexpected Thing".
Bobby has been taken hostage by the LAPD sniper who'd narrowly missed putting a bullet in Eddie Diaz mere hours ago. Ethan, former LAPD sniper and suffering from some sort of psychosis, set a large warehouse on fire as a trap for firefighters.
His chosen hostage is Bobby Nash, who has resigned himself to his fate knowing that the rest of his team is safe.
Mara watches from the sidelines at first, witnessing Athena Grant and her fellow police tried to negotiate for Ethan to let Bobby go. It isn't working and the fire is getting closer and closer to the room Ethan is holding Bobby
Years of secret love, a yearning she vowed to never act on and even take to her grave, all flare to life once more. Running into a burning building wasn't an unfamiliar occurrence for her, but this was unlike any other call.
For Mara, the person on the line was her very reason for breathing and waking up each morning. She doesn't hesitate to put everything out in the open for the small chance she might save the man she loved.

Summary
***This story picks up shortly after the events of the season 2 finale. I decided to go back and develop the story line and character arcs a bit more.
For those who haven’t read ‘The Most Unexpected Thing’, Mara Desmond is a character who joined the 118 about the same time that Eddie does. Like all good characters, she comes with a past and a serious amount of baggage that she tries to keep buried in the past.
At the same time Bobby’s been in a relationship with Athena (who has her own side story in a different arc) and is content.
Following the engine flipping and seeing the members of his team lying injured in the street pretty much breaks him. Athena decides to end their relationship because she feels he is only half in, not thinking about her before laying his life on the line when he offered himself up to Freddie Costas as a hostage.
Getting to a breaking point, Bobby decides to say screw it and grabs some top shelf whiskey before his plans are interrupted.
