“Don’t you have a pack?” Stiles asks him –by then he had discovered that the wolf was in fact a male wolf –“I mean, wolves move in packs, right? Lone wolves don’t make it on their own. I read it yesterday.” He says while they’re both sprawled on the fallen leaves in Stiles’ secret-thinking spot in the woods.
Derek licks his face, and Stiles laughs. “Is that your way to tell me that I’m your pack?” Derek licks him again on the nose, making the boy’s face scrunch up, “Ugh. Gross, dude!” he wipes his drool covered face with his sleeve and then gives the wolf a pointed look, “I’m not a wolf, you should have noticed, you know, I don’t exactly have fur and I don’t growl and I don’t have glowing eyes…” He says leaning in to look them closer, “Are you even supposed to have those kind of eyes? I couldn’t find anything about wolves and glowing eyes on the internet..” The wolf snorts.Series

He was pretty sure his eyes grew two sizes too big for his face, when he saw a tiny furball, poking his head from the end of the bed as it climbed it, and then made its way, mewling loudly and with intent, towards Stiles.
“Oh my god.”
Stiles gasped as it curled itself against his chest. The kitten was so tiny that it fit cosily in the palm of his hand.
“Where did you come from?” He asked looking down at it, dropping his chin to his chest.
The kitten didn’t reply to him, of course, just proceeded into settling himself more comfortable between his hand and chest. It was the cutest shit he’d seen in a while.
And then, he heard another mewl, and another orange furball, climbed on the bed and then on him, snuggling between his free hand and Stiles’ shoulder.
“Oh my god.” Stiles repeated, rubbing his face against the soft fur. “I’m being attacked by a hoard of kittens.” He whispered, giggling softly.
He climbed off the bed deciding to investigate.

“What’s going on?” Derek asked.
Scott shook his head, “You need to see.”
“Would you stop with the fucking mystery and just tell us already?” Stiles snapped at him.
“We found a baby,” Scott relented, starting to half jog towards the opposite line of trees they had been standing in front of.
Stiles looked at Derek and found him frowning deeply. He reached for his hand and squeezed, Derek looked at him and gave him a small smile, lacing his fingers with Stiles’.
Scott took them to the big tree in the middle of the forest that had a hollow bark, except this time when they looked inside, it wasn’t really hollow. A little girl, maybe four or five years old, was sitting in there all curled up in herself, her arms hugging her knees tightly.

Derek smiled. A small, little thing that barely betrayed the fondness that he felt for the person in front of him. But fondness, maybe wasn’t the right word. There was that, and so much more. Too much. And Derek battled a war with his wolf every day and every instant he spent with Stiles, since the moment he’d caught his scent that day in the woods, barely a year ago.
Because, it was him. And he knew it would feel- it felt right. But it wasn’t the right time.
Stiles was too young and still figuring out who he was and Derek… well, he was trying to figure out who he was without all the people he’d loved most his entire life.
So, yeah, it wasn’t the right time, not now. Not with everything that happened and was going on.
But he'd wait.

“My mom used to make one for me every time she’d see me sad…” he’d said with a small, nostalgic smile. “I miss them.” he’d added distractedly. “I miss mom.” He’d said, more quietly. And Derek knew he hadn’t been supposed to hear that.
So, in that moment his mind had been already made up, thinking up how and where to make one for Stiles.

Scott had howled enraged and gone after him with the others, but Derek had frantically turned to look for Stiles, his heart starting to beat madly against his ribcage and when he couldn’t find him anywhere he looked at Scott running after the genie and ran in the opposite direction.
