Summary
Three centuries ago, the tundral country of Rovanikka was annihilated by the Catastrophe, a blizzard of mysterious origin and substance; so too were its twelve gods, the Jerihivan. Today, the deities’ descendants are divided into two fiercely warring factions—the Vaupauta and the Jatkuva. Jouseppi Renrusl, nicknamed Jo, is the son of the Vaupauta's head, who is, in addition, the leader of a large-scale rebellion against the nation of Icenia’s ruthless government. Commander Aksel Renrusl finds it more and more difficult to protect his two sons from Icenia’s brutal civil war, as well as the jaws of the Jatkuva, allied with Icenia’s government. The opposing faction has already torn his family apart enough, having experimented on Jo as an infant and rendering him terminally ill from a certain point forward. As the wars intensify, Jo’s questions about the factions, Rovanikka, and his father seem to forever go unanswered. How does his father know so, so much about Rovanikka's history? Why is the Jatkuva so unforgivably hell-bent on revenge for their “fallen country”? As the old saying in Rovanikka goes, “Only the earth, forests, and seas know,” but that doesn’t satisfy the centuries of deceit and the warping of history itself.
