And truly, he's happy that Johnny is getting the recognition and love he deserves. But being second-best stings after a while, especially when he's second-best to his own soulmate Dally.

After his parents' death and the revelation that his soulmate doesn't belong to him, Ponyboy begins to isolate himself in his room. There's a hole in his chest that his shattered heart once occupied, but now his world feels cold and empty. He's convinced he's destined to be alone, and in his grief he burdens his family and friends.
Everything changes one night when he's been jumped and left gravely injured, and he begins to realize he isn't as alone as he first thought.
