Summary
With the continent at war, towns being ravaged by Imperial forces, and commonfolk displaced from their homes, stability is something to treasure, now, more than ever.
Even when that stability comes in the form of Sylvain breaking hearts and Ingrid mopping up the tears that follow. That, at least, is routine.
Ingrid is clinging to every last shred of normality and stability that she can get her hands on.
Sylvain’s smile is light and happy when he answers. “I’m gonna ask the Professor out. Wait, no, I’m going to ask Byleth out. I should probably use his name to do that, huh?”
Ingrid blinks dumbly. “You’re going to what,” she says flatly. There's no way she heard that correctly. There’s no way that womanising, philandering, skirt-chasing Sylvain is interested in their distinctly male former teacher.
Sylvain is, apparently, intent on flipping her world on its head.
She has no intention of letting that happen.

Summary
He might be a better man than he used to think, but he’s certainly not as good as Byleth thinks he is, because whether Sylvain deserves him or not, he isn’t going to let Byleth go.
He does, of course, let him go in the literal sense so that he can continue greeting the rest of their class. But even as Mercedes is weeping with joy on Byleth’s shoulder and Ingrid is trying her damnedest not to join her, Sylvain is making plans. Figuring out how best to go about telling Byleth that he’d straight-up die for him if he asked.
Because for five years, Sylvain has mourned the man, and he has no intention of wasting any more time keeping those feelings to himself. Not when admitting them might get him the one thing he’s always thought of as out of his reach—true happiness with someone who just sees him.
Or; Sylvain is so, so in love with Byleth. He thinks Byleth might just love him back, too.

Summary
Byleth cuts him off with a quick kiss. "Sleep, sunshine. I want to fall into bed with you… and then fall asleep.” One eyebrow raises. “Do you really think we have the energy for anything else, even if we weren’t taking things slowly?”
And now it’s Sylvain’s turn for a little cognitive dissonance. He’s so very relieved that Byleth respects him and his wishes, yet shockingly disappointed that there’s a guarantee of no wandering hands on their first full night together.
Maybe he’s not as afraid of the physical side of things as he thinks.
(Maybe Byleth’s just ridiculously hot and standing in front of him naked.
Either way, he’s not wrong. Sylvain really is too tired to do anything but sleep tonight.)After the Imperial Vanguard tries—and fails—to invade the newly repopulated Garreg Mach, Sylvain goes looking for his boyfriend. When he finds Byleth disheartened by Dimitri's actions with Randolph von Bergliez and Byleth asks Sylvain to bathe with him instead of going to the regular bathhouse with the other former-students, Sylvain can hardly say no.
Nor does he particularly want to.
