Summary
His gaze bounces from the floor, to the still flame of the lamp on the nightstand, to the large dark canvas bag that squad leader Hange, in pajamas and a dressing gown, had dragged along before leaving her quarters and following him. On anything but Marco’s lips, so constant in croaking those disconnected sounds from one side to the other of the pillow that now, Jean seriously doubts they are capable of forming anything coherent.
Behind him, on a corner of the bed, Hange absorbs those words with the same concentration as someone trying to decipher hidden messages, only to announce, against all expectations, a meaningless 'it's the fever, Jean.'
Yeah. It’s the fever. And a whole avalanche of many other things, or rather, non-things – like his no-longer arm, his no-longer eye, his no-longer-God-knows-what else. Thanks a lot.

Summary
There's not much to say: even if he wanted to, Jean wouldn't have been able to find the right words to describe what happens inside him when, upon entering Marco's room, he finds an open window and an empty bed.
It's as if suddenly, all that symphony of sounds, smells, and dark eyelashes that flutter a couple of times at his entrance—things Jean would label as "familiar" and pin on the wall of beautiful things—suddenly, cease to exist. Suddenly, they vanish from his thoughts, as if they never even existed.
The feeling is a bit like what you experience when, walking down the stairs in the dark, after the last step, you don't find the floor where your mind mistakenly believes it to be.
It's only thanks to Lia's clumsiness that he doesn't collapse: he never would have imagined that one day, the corner of a cart against his rib would be so dear to him.
"Oh—Jean! Damn it, Jean!" she shouts, hands to her face, "What the hell are you doing here, standing at the door?!"
"Wh—where's Marco?"

Marco has changed.
When exactly it started, Jean doesn't quite know. But Marco has changed.
Perhaps it all began the morning when, instead of frowning with that blend of anger and despair that always seemed to say to Jean, 'Why did you make me go through all this?!', Marco dared to smile. A genuine smile. He stretched his lips, lifted his bandaged cheeks, and—damn it: Jean couldn't even remember what Marco's smile looked like (nor how much he liked it, enough to make him blush like a shamefaced schoolgirl in love).
