Den's words flashed by him one more time:

When Jes encountered the saying, he laughed (borderline) maniacally. His Bible being 'pliant?' Really? Tell them of all the slight bruises that Jes often had to hold lovingly. They may have only dated briefly then. Still, more than anyone, Jes knew for sure: 'Bible' and 'pliant' should never come together. Ever.
Especially when he recalled that fateful (and sexually frustrating) night in its whole sequence: How Bible's held Jes' cheeks tender and whispered almost like a dangerous lullaby, "Now, now... Phi' Jes. We are currently working, are we not? Why won't you behave yourself, hmm? The longer you don't discipline yourself, the longer this work will take us, no?"
