“Look, it’s fine.” Jo gets up to join Nancy, unsteady on her feet. “You saved my life, I saved yours. We’re even.” She’s halfway out the door before Stevie can argue that no, actually, they aren’t.
The proof of that is wrapped around her filthy hair. It’s etched into the thin line of pale skin that circles Jo’s wrist, now exposed. They may have saved each other’s lives, but Jo gave her a piece of comfort she may never get back.
It’s a reminder that they might not ever be equal, and the thought of that makes her sick to her stomach for reasons she can’t explain.
