Summary
“What happened?” he asked, for there was no doubt in his mind that something had happened.
“We went into the jungle,” Fifer explained. “Panther...”
“I hit her,” Thisbe mumbled into Alex’s brightly colored robe, now soaked through with tears. She sniffled. “She broke.”
Alex argues with his sisters about their adventures in the jungle.

Summary
“It’s...complicated.” Samheed put a hand on Fifer’s shoulder. “I agree wholeheartedly that he’s being drastic at this point. But I also understand where he’s coming from completely.”
“Of course you’re on his side,” Thisbe muttered.
“I’m on his side in terms of wanting to keep you two safe. That’s Alex’s main concern. At the end of the day, you’re his whole world, now. He would never want anything to hurt you.”
After the fight over dinner, Samheed comforts the twins and gives them a warning.

Summary
He had to get out of here. He slept for too long, last time, and Sky had tried to leave him, and it was his responsibility to save her mother, to save Thisbe, so he had to wake up and stop her from leaving again.
The dark-eyed woman stopped him before he could properly get to his feet, though even just the attempt had taken him a solid few minutes of trying, he was still so groggy.
"Uh-uh," she said, easing him back down onto the makeshift bed on the floor. It was a lot like the cot he'd slept in as a child, in his little bedroom in Quill, though there was no Aaron across the room, just out of arm's reach. "You need rest. I promise, you're safe here. Back to bed with you."
Lani, Meghan, and Samheed had their "holiday" on Warbler. Aaron had his on the Island of Shipwrecks. Sky had hers six feet under that stupid volcano. Now it's Alex's turn, in a run-down, mostly-abandoned palace, nestled between apple trees and a river. Besides, when the Quillen idea of a "holiday" includes sending children off to their deaths, he feels like this is pretty par for the course.

Summary
Asha quietly moved next to her, staring up at the monumental structure of the dilapidated palace. Behind them, Thisbe could hear Fifer trying to help Maiven climb off of the dragon.
There were tears in Asha’s eyes as she looked upon the once-great place. A few birds flew out of an open window, which seemed to make her lip quiver even harder. Her eyes traced over the building once, twice, three times, searching for something.
“You’re Ashguard’s granddaughter, right? There’s gotta be some family history here." Thisbe put a hand on Asha’s shoulder to steady her, then pulled her in for a quick side hug around the shoulders. “We’re gonna get this place back up and running, I promise.”
Thisbe, Fifer, Maiven, and Asha explore Ashguard's Palace. There, they find some rather familiar faces.
