Summary
She freezes mid-sentence, halfway through a call me right now and doesn’t know what to do until her numb fingers manage to open the groupchat instead and send one frantic, numb, help me, into it. Sending it straight to Jace’s phone, where she can’t even begin to process the fact that it will go unanswered, and to Cregan’s because nearly eighteen years ago he sent the same text in the middle of the night when Arra was dying on the table and Baela knows now without a doubt that he will find her. Just like they found him.
Baela needs him here because he loves Jace too, because he loves her kids, because she knows that he’ll set his grief aside to protect them and care for them while she doesn’t have the strength to do it herself. She needs him here to tell her the truth, because it’s still not real, it's still not possible, it can’t be possible.

Summary
Aunt Sara liked to say that Rickon’s father had northern stoicism, though deep down Rickon had never fully agreed with that statement.
His dad was warm, arms always willing and waiting if they were needed, with a phone that had probably never been silenced so he could make sure he never missed a call from someone in their family. When he laughed, it was quiet, but it was frequent and genuine. When he spoke, it was purposeful, thoughtful.
It took his Uncle Jace dying for Rickon to realize what she’d meant, to realize that he’d never seen his father cry before.

Summary
The sun sinks, shadows changing on the floor as the minutes turn into hours. The tears come and go, leaving her head aching and her pillowcase damp. Her phone buzzes in the drawer again and again. She nearly kicks the nightstand over. Someone knocks on the door early on, right after she gives up on finding something to watch, and then Rhaena knocks a while after that, calling to her through the door only to be met with silence from Baela. She doesn’t want Rhaena’s comfort, spitefully, because Rhaena has her husband. Her husband walked onto that boat, drank, swam, and walked off it alive and it’s not fair that Baela’s didn’t-
. . .
It’s infuriating.
Everything is, really, if she thinks about it for too long.

Summary
The AC in the church goes out an hour before the service starts, as if they needed things to be worse.
The funeral programs are sweat-damp, an assortment of suit jackets hung over the back of pews, it’s too close to summer for this, Cregan thinks as he fights the urge to hit something. He can’t though, not when Jocelyn keeps wandering over to lean against his side in the foyer, sniffling, trying to hide her red eyes from the pitying looks as Rickon shifts uncomfortably next to them. She leaves when Joff arrives in his dress blues, sprinting into his arms and clinging to his neck before anyone else can get to him. Even Rhaenyra’s half-siblings and their mother trail in, Floris Baratheon still sporting a hefty diamond on her left hand despite the papers being filed.
Appearances, appearances, Jace’s voice rings out in his head, smug, on the edge of laughter.

Summary
Rhaenys’ plane touches down the next night and Baela welcomes the linen crush of a warm blouse anointed with the smell of luxury. Chanel, the expensive detergent that you can only get in the boutique by the water, and the chalky floral smell of pressed powder. She stands wobbly on high heels for the first time in twenty years, ankles shaking but firmly supported by her grandmother’s arms.
Even when we’re wounded, Rhaenys says in her mind, in her memories, we stand like we aren’t.

Summary
“I’ll do that,” the nursing director shifts in that squeaky chair, a painful record scratch across Baela’s senses, “but before I do, I want you to go home and ask yourself if walking into this hospital for work is the right thing for you to keep doing.”
What do you think I’ll do if I leave? Feel better? Where am I meant to go if I’m not here-
“Are you asking me to resign?”

Summary
Baela hummed at his answer, sinking down into her side of the sectional couch, “Did you ever…think about remarrying? You and Aly have been on and off so many years but I don’t think we’ve ever really talked about it. Not you and I, at least. And Jace never mentioned anything.”
Cregan shrugged from the other end, setting his glass down on the table.
“There was a time where I thought maybe if the right person came along I’d be open to it, but it felt wrong to bring someone into Rickon’s life who didn’t know his mom. Not to mention, we don’t exactly have the best situation for bringing people in, you know?”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Baela,” He shook his head, “If you were dating someone and they consistently put a whole other family before you, you wouldn’t want to stick around, would you?”

Summary
Nothing was simple.
The bed, haunted. The couch, corrupted. The shirt she was wearing when she kissed him? In a grocery bag shoved into the back of her closet, as if that would make it to where it didn’t happen. The shorts that had crawled over him? Buried in her laundry hamper as if a wash could cleanse them of her sickness.
. . .
In which Baela has a truly terrible couple of days following The Couch Incident

Summary
She goes back to the diner.
He goes back to Aly. Fights with Aly. Makes up with Aly. Gets kicked out by Aly.
Baela doesn’t look at him except for when she has to. Dae looks at him like maybe he did something. Rickon looks at him like he can see the depths of Cregan’s guilty soul, and maybe that’s the worst part of the whole miserable affair.
