Stevie wasn't hearing a singe word Nancy was saying.
Something about metaphors, or something. Whatever it was, it didnt matter, not really. Not when Nancy Wheeler was sitting cross-legged on her bed in an oversized sweater, chewing absently on her pen cap like she hadn't just shattered every coherent thought in Stevie's brain.
"Are you even listening?" Nancy asked, glancing up from her paper with a teasing smile.
Stevie blinked. "What? Yeah. Totally."
"Then what was I saying?"

The TV was on. Some rerun she couldn't name. It was playing too bright, too loud, the flicker of it making her eyes burn. She should turn it off.
She should do a lot of things. But the frozen peas on her head were starting to melt, and her limbs felt heavy, and moving felt like the least appealing thing in the world.
So she just… stayed.
Her lip throbbed. Her cheekbone was swelling. But the worst of it wasn't physical.
It never was.
