They stare at each other for a long moment. She feels weak in his blue-eyed gaze. Blue like melancholy, like the code for someone’s heart failing. Like rough waters she’ll surely drown in.
He takes a step closer to her; a late autumnal breeze lifts their hair, encircling them both in the perfume of the other. She misses the smoke. “I think about you all the time," he confesses. "Not Mel, or Abby, just you.”
It would be so easy to drown. To give in. But she’s never been allowed to be selfish in any way that matters. She doesn’t know how to start. “This is crazy,” she declines, rubbing her forehead as she turns to leave. “You and me, it’s insane.”
