Summary
The kid squirmed by his side, and his eyes flicked to her. They had a silent conversation, one in which the kid made a demanding expression and nodded towards Lucy emphatically, making the man turn back to her with a slight furrow to his brow as he asked, “You said you’re a doctor?”
“I am.” Lucy said “and if you’re who I think you are, then I know why you’re here.”
“Holy shit,” the kid breathed, voice soft with awe.“we actually fucking made it?”
“No, you didn’t.” Lucy replied, guilt stabbing at her for being the one to dash the elated expression right off the kids face. “and if I were you, I’d turn around and go back wherever the fuck you came from. The fireflies can’t help you and you can’t help them.”

Dr Lucy Rolland did not believe in a cure, and she certainly didn't believe in the fireflies anymore. Then she stumbled across Ellie and Joel at the university in Colorado, and was dragged back into the search for a cure kicking and screaming.

Summary
Lucy’s feet hit the ground and a strangled, really fucking concerning noise escaped her throat because the last time Ellie heard her make that kind of noise was right before she stabbed Joel in the face and locked herself in the bathroom screaming.
When Ellie whipped around to see what was happening, Lucy was staring at Tommy, eyes wide and wet. Tommy was staring back her, his grin gone and his mouth now agape.
