Summary
The river water was cold against Jean’s skin, and he shivered slightly as he stepped into it. He winced slightly, as much as he enjoyed the clean feeling of the rivers that streamed down from the mountains, he always found it a shame that the price for that seemed to be an icy cold temperature. He wasn’t normally a fan of cold water. But the sweat and grime sticking to his skin after three days on the road was icky enough for him to endure the discomfort for however long it would take to feel just a bit cleaner. Glancing back, he noted that his dragon had already settled down on the bank, lounging lazily in the sun, wings spread out to capture as much warmth as possible. The golden scales shimmered in the light, and Jean took a moment to appreciate the sight. Even when lying in the sun like a big, lazy cat, Reiner was magnificent and Jean knew that despite the relaxed appearance, Reiner was fully on guard, leaving Jean to safely wash himself in the river.

Summary
These were his favourite evenings. Resting on the high cliffs by the ocean after a swim, letting his body dry in the air while the heat that the rocks had accumulated through the day seeped into his skin. But the best part wasn’t even the warm stone, or the beautiful sunset that he wasn’t watching. No, the best part was the presence of the golden dragon by his side, lounging in the last rays of sunshine with him.

“Merpeople! That’s so cool! Reiner, check it out!” He called back, mildly disappointed when the dragon simply glanced over at them with an unimpressed look. “Well, suit yourself, mr. I’m better than everyone else…” Jean grumbled and settled down in the shallow waters, pulled his legs up and wrapped his arms around his knees. The merman slowly closed the distance between them, slithering across the ocean floor with his head above water, looking curiously at Jean.
In which Jean meets merpeople for the first time and Reiner is pretty damn strange about it.

Summary
When you requested the time of a dragon, there was a price to pay if the time was wasted in the eyes of the dragon. And that price was a free meal. At the end of the ceremony, the dragon would either snap it jaws closed around Jean’s body and rip him to pieces, or engulf him in blue flames that would dissolve the chains, but leave his skin intact. Jean swallowed a lump in his throat as he looked around the plaza. He didn’t know which dragon would come for him. It was always a secret to the rider until the dragon stood before them. When Jean had asked why, Levi had told him it was because first impressions served to strengthen the magic in the bonding, but Jean wasn’t sure he bought that. The shadow of the walls surrounding the plaza slowly crept in on him, and Jean stepped back, as if it would devour him if it touched his boots. There was no use in thinking about it any longer. He had accepted to bond with a dragon, and only time would tell if he lived to tell the tale. Turning around on his heel, he marched resolutely to the gate and headed back to his quarters to prepare himself.
