Summary
“Can I keep this?” Luke asks, standing in the middle of their closet, clothes piled around his feet. Suits and pairs of shoes and underwear and blue jeans and flannels.
“Hm?” Beau sits on the carpet, his hands in his lap, watching Luke pack his clothes for him. Luke volunteered, and Beau thought to let him. Anything to distract Luke from what was bound to happen to the two of them. Beau’s flight in six hours, sending him across the country. No days off or games against each other for the rest of the season, for over two months.
“I want to sleep in it,” Luke folds the t-shirt over his forearm. “Because I will miss you.”
Or, Luke struggles through his tenure as captain of the Nashville Predators. Anthony Beauvillier joins the team for the second time as a veteran presence to help. To hide the relationship they immediately start, they devise the perfect plan: stage fights behind the net, talk shit in interviews, refuse to sit together in the locker room. No one suspects a thing, until Luke finds out he’s pregnant over bye week, and Beau is traded that next morning.

Summary
It’s a reminder that time is moving all too fast. He and Luke were swimming in the ocean in Cancún, then he blinked, and his partner is five months pregnant and nipping his tongue with shaved down, missing bottom teeth. Beau is afraid he will blink again and his daughter will be a teenager, and Luke will have all but forgotten him, because he’s off playing for his tenth, eleventh, twelfth NHL team and family life is nothing but a long shadow that haunts him.
Luke asks to go to sleep. He says his lower back is hurting, and she’s moving too much, and his temples are throbbing. Beau lets Luke back into their bedroom and closes the balcony doors behind him.
Luke is slipping through his fingers, and there’s nothing he can do about it.
Or, Luke and Beau spend the summer together before Solana is born. They both spend the summer in love with each other, and missing the family they should become, knowing they will go long-distance that winter.

Summary
Luke cuddles close to him. He pulls Solana into his arms, for a change. She coos and melts into him. He wonders if it was a moral failing, taking so much time off after she was born. He wonders if he should have been at the rink the weekend after, like Zach had requested. Post-partum and a lame hip can be ignored to score some goals, right?
“Do you think I’m weak?” Luke purposefully asks the question now, because he knows Beau cannot respond.
He watches as Beau’s eyes grow sad, though, as Beau stares at him, wishing Luke could see himself the way Beau sees him, so different from his reflection in Beau’s glassy pupils.
“You’re strong,” Beau whispers to him. “Stronger than I am.”
Or, Luke knows how to fix things. He can leave the sport he loathes. He can repair his relationship with the man he loves. He has everything he needs to be better.
He sabotages himself instead.
