Joy is what Scully feels this year. She and Mulder are now permanently-retired from all things FBI. Being permanently-retired from all things medical is just a cherry on top. Everything is just the way that Scully and Mulder want it.
They also have perfect reasons for their joy. Committed to being a nice, normal person, William is back in their lives. For good. This Christmas even marks the first one his parents can share with him. Together. And then there is the second reason. Surprise twin daughters will be crashing into their lives. Very soon. Miracles do occur. Even when they’re overdue. Still… Scully’s heart is just so full that she couldn’t ask for anything else. Whatsoever. Life is beautiful.
What Scully doesn’t expect is Mulder’s last present of the day for her.
