“Well. Someone looks much improved.”
“Nothing like a cold river to knock the sulk out of a man,” Vax said, settling beside her on the log, Erebus immediately sprawling out on the first available lap and sinking in needle teeth. It was Vex’s lap, as it happened, and the catlet latched onto her thigh with all the dignity and poise of a tiny barnacle.
Vex yowled, shoving Vax’s shoulder. “What is this, and why does it hate me?”
“He’s a paragon of taste,” Vax replied, teeth flashing. He dragged a finger behind Erebus’s ears; the kitten wriggled with ecstasy and flexed its claws deeper into Vex’s leather. “See? I’m told it brings good luck if a black cat tries to murder you before breakfast.”
Vax has found someone to love. He also might have Percy. Those things are not the same. Not yet anyway.
