Will inhaled, then sighed. “I’ve got a fucking headache,” he admitted quietly. “It’s not sick. It’s just—too much. Everything’s loud. Everything’s bright. My brain won’t shut up.”
Mike huffed softly. “Yeah,” he said. “Valentine’s Day is a goddamn nightmare.”
Will laughed weakly against his shoulder. “You’re not helping,” he said, nodding at the tie.
Mike grinned. “Hey. I dress festive for the children.”
“Mm,” Will said. “Sure. You just enjoy tormenting me.”

Summary
Even with the headphones clamped over his ears, the vibration of the music traveled straight through him. Will could feel it in the way Ollie’s little body went rigid, in the way his fingers curled tight into fists and then clawed at Will’s jacket. The shirt — fine cotton, chosen carefully — had turned into an enemy. Ollie tugged at it with frantic, jerky motions, whining sharply, breath coming too fast.
Will bounced him gently, the motion automatic, his arms moving even as his heart stuttered with guilt. “Shh. I know. I know,” he whispered, lips brushing Ollie’s hair, which was damp with sweat. The smell of baby shampoo mixed with heat and stress filled Will’s nose.

“Who’s Eleven?” Lainey finally asked.
The room didn’t go quiet so much as it stilled, like the air itself had braced. Forks paused halfway to mouths. Someone’s glass clinked softly against a plate and then was set down too quickly.
Lainey had been carrying the question around for weeks now, rolling it between her teeth whenever she heard the name drift through conversations she wasn’t meant to be listening to. Eleven. Always spoken softly. Always followed by a sigh, or a pause, or the way her dads’ faces seemed to fold inward just a little. She’d wondered why she’d never met her. Why everyone seemed to miss someone she didn’t know.
