Summary
The elderly Elezen man before Thancred smooths out the pages of parchment on his desk, his glasses low on his nose and his hand readying a quill pen with ink. To what end, Thancred can only assume critique and correction of the scrawled, barely legible answers he himself has provided.
Thancred feels a foreign pang of anxiety at the idea of being assessed. He has never been assessed, before. No one has ever expected anything of him.

Summary
Y’shtola is eighteen and in her final year of her formal Studium education, years ahead of her peers, when she is first put in the tower. Thancred is surprised it took this long. Y’shtola does not deserve to be in a tower but she is brilliant, and as many born brilliant, subsequently controversial. She takes after her mentor, or mother, or whoever that woman is, and she takes after Master Louisoix, too, all bucked tradition and tested convention and stepped-upon robes of sour academics. She was always going to end up behind a locked door. There is no room in Sharlayan for bog girls and wharf rats.

Summary
They reject him wholecloth. They accuse him of not seeing them as family, which is true, he doesn’t, and of trying to remove them from their home, which he is, and which was, he reminds them, his home first, but this only makes himself come across as petty and selfish and not genuinely concerned about their wellbeings. And he was concerned about their wellbeings, mostly, at the end of the day, all bitterness aside.

Summary
“You’ve been drunk in the antechamber of the Stones no less than six times over the past moon, to my incomplete knowledge.” Alphinaud squares his shoulders. “That is unacceptable in a profession that may require your expertise at an emergency’s notice.”
“That’s what this is about?” Thancred says, deliberate—near mocking—in his neutrality. He seeks to frame Alphinaud as seeding undue discourse. He seeks to frame Alphinaud as a prude. He can orchestrate a conversation to his whim, Alphinaud knows, but Alphinaud too is trained in the art of wordcraft. Alphinaud will not allow another man to strip control of a debate from him, no matter how skilled he may be in charm or manipulation.

Summary
“Would you like to hold her?”
Ameliance Leveilleur is the most beautiful woman Thancred has ever met, and if he was still a crude-mouthed wharf-rat he would pass over her purse on sheer admiration. He is no thief, though. Not anymore. He is a man under intense scrutiny. He is a ward, not a son, not a brother, certainly not an uncle, and he is expected to act like it.
He looks at the soft bundle in her arms, then to her, and shakes his head.
