Temporary Fix by powderbluebunny

Summary
Luca had been in a mood since he had arrived at practice that morning. Not obviously so, but Ilya was perceptive. His shoulders had been slumped, he had set his bag down heavier than usual, his left shoe had been untied and he’d seemed thoroughly annoyed about it despite making no move to fix it. He had not joined in with Young and LaPointe’s teasing of Holmbergs terrible acid wash jeans. He had shrugged off Bood when he had clapped him on the shoulder in greeting, his smile too tight to be genuine.
Shane had noticed too, quietly observing as he pulled his gear on beside Ilya. “He needs to drop.”
“You think so?” Ilya asked, despite the fact he had the same suspicion. Luca dressed slowly, clumsily. He stared at his skates for a while as though he could will them to tie themselves and save him the trouble. Shane shrugged at Ilya.
“Probably.” He said. “He doesn’t like going to centres I don’t think. I heard him talking about it with Young a few weeks ago. He’s been putting it off.”

Summary
Luca wasn’t going to throw a tantrum. He wasn’t. Even though everything in him was telling him too, that sitting on the floor in the middle of the locker room and just flat out wailing would surely get him out of this, he didn’t. Because it wasn’t a little day, because being scared of the doctor was silly, because he didn’t think acting like a brat and refusing to go to his appointment would actually get him the cuddles and assurances that of course he didn’t have to go to the scary place where they poke him with needles that he wanted. It would probably get him cuddles at least, but Shane would still make him go to the doctor.

Summary
“No.” Luca argued, Ilya looking at him through the rearview mirror with an arched eyebrow. Either not seeing it or maybe suffering temporary insanity, Luca continued. “More than once a week is crazy Hollzy, we don’t have time for that. It’s the middle of the season.”
“You will drop as often as doctor tells you too.” Ilya said firmly, making sure to catch Luca’s eyes in the mirror. “Doctor said as often as possible.”
“Well yeah but it’s not-”
“Haasy, do you want to spend rest of drive with a sore ass?” Ilya cut off simply. Luca’s argument died on his throat, his ears growing pink. He shook his head minutely. “Then stop arguing. Health is not something you bargain. Doctor says you drop as often as possible, you do it. Is not discussion.”
“I just don’t want to bother you guys with this.” Haasy mumbled, lip caught between his teeth as he dappled his finger across his arm, probably trying to stop himself from biting at them. “I can handle it myself.”

Summary
He’d almost forgotten about the budding need to drop that was rearing its head entirely as the night wore on, settled and happy squished between Young and LaPoint in a corner booth sharing a greasy pizza from the bar. Then the last of the ‘grown ups’ had started to head off, ready to get back to their beds and their families, leaving just the rookies behind in the bar with strict instructions from Bood not to do anything stupid. And that was fine too, because Luca was having fun arguing with LaPoint about who was better at MHL 21, but he did also have the sudden, distinct feeling that he had been left unsupervised. Like when you’re at the park as a little kid and suddenly realised you’ve wandered a bit too far away from your parents. It’s not a sense of danger, exactly, but a slight unease.

Summary
Luca was sweaty, his chest heaving as he sat in his cubby, back leaning against the wall while he caught his breath. His face hurt, split wide in a grin while he watched the others dance around the room jeering. It had been a good game. A hard game, one that had required focus and care and discipline, but good. Ottawa had won, 5-3. Two of those goals had been made by Luca, and he had assisted LaPointe in another. He had stripped down to his compression shirt, watching the bustle of the locker room around him.
It was a Wednesday night. They had two days off before they returned to the rink for another home game on Saturday. Then they were on a roadie for two weeks. It meant Luca was going home with Shane and Ilya to spend as much time in headspace as possible before they got too busy to keep up with their usual schedule, because for as much as Shane and Ilya both told him it was fine if he did, Luca had no intention of dropping during the roadie. The two days of little time had been the compromise.

Summary
Technically speaking, Luca wasn’t avoiding them. They had known that the roadie would be busy, that dropping probably wasn’t going to fit into a jam-packed schedule of games and flights. That was the whole point of the weekend drop session to begin with, to keep Luca from spiralling until they managed to get back into a steady routine. So no, Luca was not technically avoiding Shane and Ilya, no matter what LaPointe said.
“Whatever man.” LaPointe replied flippantly, when Luca had told him as much when he had asked why Luca was avoiding them. “You’re usually attached at the hip is all.”
“I am not!” Luca defended which made Holmberg, the fucking traitor, snort into his shitty airport coffee. Luca was mildly vindicated when he promptly choked on it.

Summary
“That is stupid too.” Ilya declared. Did not call Haasy’s mother an idiot, in case it made the boy sad, but he wanted too. “You are still tiny baby person. You and every other rookie. You are all like if an infant was a grown up.”
“Gee, thanks.” Luca snorted, a yawn stretching past his lips. “I’m sure Bergy would love to hear that.”
Ilya laughed softly, kissing the top of Luca’s curls gently. Bergy always took great pride in the fact that he was the most responsible of the rookies, always making sure they got home safe or stayed on task during training. He would make a good captain one day, when he was older and wiser.
“You know she is wrong, yes?” Ilya asked. “Family is supposed to take care of you. There is no expiration date to that.”
“I guess.” Luca hummed.

Summary
Luca didn’t feel well. He wasn’t really sure how to categorise it though. It was something small, a pinprick of discomfort that he couldn’t place which made it feel like it was coming from everywhere. It was driving him sort of crazy. It had been going on for a few days. At first he hadn’t thought that much of it. It started as a tiny ache in his jaw, one that he’d put down to grinding his teeth on his mouthguard during the game a bit too much and forgotten all about. But then for some reason he hadn’t been able to sleep, which had given him a headache, which made his eyes itchy and his ears feel weird, and from there it just hadn’t stopped.
