"Aerion, wait," Dunk started, standing up. "I didn't mean—"
"You didn't mean to what?" Aerion snapped, whirling on him. "To psychoanalyze me? To trade tragic family secrets with a twelve-year-old over—let me guess—greasy fast food?"
The revitalized facade was cracking, revealing the raw, jagged edges underneath.
"You think because you drove him to his lessons, you understand this family?" Aerion spat. "You think because he told you a bedtime story, you have the right to speak about Mother to me?"
"I was trying to help," Dunk said, his voice rising. "You pretend you're a robot, but you're just a sad kid who—"
"STOP!" Aerion screamed.
(In which Dunk finds out more about Aerion’s eating disorder, and consequently finds him on the bathroom floor.)

"If not the drugs, then the money," Maekar mused. "You are poor. Destitute, from what I hear. A scholarship student from Flea Bottom. You see a broken, vulnerable Targaryen prince and you think… what? A payday? A settlement?"
"I don't want your money," Dunk spat.
"Everyone wants the money," Maekar said sternly. "Eventually."
He lowered his voice, so low that the hum of the room almost drowned it out.
"Or, is it something else?"
(In which Dunk professes his confusion to a sleeping, cruel patient.)

"I don't owe you anything," Aerion spat, his voice finally breaking into a fragile, desperate waver. "Not my life. Not my gratitude."
"Maybe not," Dunk said softly, the anger bleeding out of him, leaving only a bone-deep, exhausted sincerity.
He reached out, his large, calloused fingers wrapping gently around the cold metal of the bedrail, mere inches from Aerion's trembling hand.
"But you owe it to yourself to live."
(In which the cruel patient finally wakes up, and he and Dunk talk about their past and their future. Sort of.)
