Summary
Michael had always been the mitigator of their family. He held onto Ponyboy's ramblings about feeling left out, kept Sodapop sane when Sandy's abandonment came back to haunt him, and covered the bills Darry's job wouldn't be able to cover.
Michael Curtis, at nineteen, was the second oldest of them all. The sarcastic, funny and 'lazy' one who never could get his words out right. Life, after their parents' deaths, leaves him feeling numb and out of control; something he gets back in a 'magic cure' his coworker hooks him up with. But nothing worth having is free.
