His bloody hand lifted weakly from Shane’s wrist and tapped once against the laminated badge clipped to Shane’s scrub top. DVM. The movement was tiny, desperate. Shane’s mouth went dry.
“I can’t treat a human being,” he said weakly.
The stranger swayed suddenly against him. For one terrible second Shane thought he was going to argue again. Instead his full weight sagged heavily sideways and the man’s eyes rolled to the back of his head and stayed there.
