“I want to do something,” Shane said quietly, “You left Boston.”
“Ah, so this is competition,” Ilya said, not a question.
He promised Ilya that they could "change the narrative" together. Ilya was keeping up his end of the plan: leaving Boston for Ottawa. And now it was Shane's turn. He was going to come out to his teammates in Montreal.

Marleau didn’t mind. If Boston wanted to pay him seven figures to babysit a hockey prodigy, he'd be happy to sign on the dotted line. He grew up in Nova Scotia, an eldest son too good at hockey to end up working the lobster season. The rougher texture of his upbringing meant that he could hold his own against Rozanov’s somewhat abrasive personality—understood the way that "fucking asshole" could be said with great affection. Marleau at least respected that the rookie had the talent to back up his attitude and could take as good as he gave as far as chirping went.
Or five times when Cliff Marleau felt like Ilya Rozanov's big brother and one time that he needed to say it out loud. (Updated 6/6/2026)
