For a second, he’s certain he’s dead. His hand fades through as he tries to use the wall to push him up, and breathing isn’t doing anything to slow the hammering of his heart. It’s like he’s a ghost— or at least, what he’d always imagined being a ghost would be. The antlers lay discarded in the corner of the tower. He’s standing over them, but he doesn’t know where his body is. All he sees is a robed figure facing the wall. Not talking, not breathing, just…staring. He has half a mind to realize that this can’t be real. He’s dead, seized, something.
The other half his mind realizes, too slow, that he’s the one in the robe, and he knows with a sudden, striking certainty: he failed. ”
