Summary
"Hello, sister," he said, taking a knee even though she was turned away from him, gazing out of her office window.
He waited for her to speak, as was polite and customary. Every time he did, he couldn't help but remember their childhood, roughhousing and arguing and dozing together and planning and spitting half-sensical insults at each other. How times have changed.
"A girl snuck in through the wall the other day," Justine finally explained. "There was a crack, it seems, and she slipped right in."
There's a new girl in Quill. Justine and Marcus need to decide what to do with her.

Summary
"I mean, obviously by that time I'd figured out that the people of Quill didn't really do weddings—they just sort of became married without any fanfare or announcement."
— The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Captives, Lisa McMann“I’m Nadia.”
His eyes flicked between her hand and her face, confusion now outweighed by a blank stare. He took her hand, though, and she shook it slightly as he replied, "Owen."
First names, she thought, trying to hide the grin on her face as they exited into the kitchen area. They certainly weren’t the custom, in Quill; no one had ever said they weren’t allowed, but they’d also never made it clear that they were now anything other than Mr. and Mrs. Stowe. But he was a just a boy named Owen, from a land called Quill, and she was just a girl named Nadia, trying her best to fit in.
Nadia and Owen get married. The wedding isn't exactly what she had always imagined, but it isn't as cold as she feared, either.

Summary
Maybe it’s for the best, she tried to convince herself, over and over. Quill wasn’t made for kids like Alex, and living here would drive him to insanity. It had almost done the same to her. The only thing keeping her going was the hope, deep down, that someday this would all be over. Someday, someone would find out who she was, would overthrow Justine, would let her go home again. It was a futile hope, a nonsense hope, the kind of hope that Quill told her over and over to bury for good. She never did. It was what fueled her.
Alex didn’t have that. Was death a better option than suffering without a cause? She didn’t know. She never could make up her mind about it.
Nadia had avoided looking at him for the past few years, once she had known that he would be Unwanted. The anticipatory grief of his scheduled death threatened to break her. In the past week, she couldn’t think of a single time that she had looked in his eyes, for fear of falling apart at the seams.
Nadia's sons leave the nest.
