Summary
Maybe it’s for the best, she tried to convince herself, over and over. Quill wasn’t made for kids like Alex, and living here would drive him to insanity. It had almost done the same to her. The only thing keeping her going was the hope, deep down, that someday this would all be over. Someday, someone would find out who she was, would overthrow Justine, would let her go home again. It was a futile hope, a nonsense hope, the kind of hope that Quill told her over and over to bury for good. She never did. It was what fueled her.
Alex didn’t have that. Was death a better option than suffering without a cause? She didn’t know. She never could make up her mind about it.
Nadia had avoided looking at him for the past few years, once she had known that he would be Unwanted. The anticipatory grief of his scheduled death threatened to break her. In the past week, she couldn’t think of a single time that she had looked in his eyes, for fear of falling apart at the seams.
Nadia's sons leave the nest.

“I’ve got an art project,” Alex explained. “I need a real life model, for face practice. It won’t take me very long. Ms. Octavia says I’m pretty good at faces, I just…need someone to draw.”
Samheed hummed slightly, shifting from one foot to the other like some classical hero, rendered in marble or oil paints, impatient to make it to a battle.>>>

Summary
After a few seconds, he tossed a component vest on the table in between them.
“This yours?” Sean asked, picking it up to inspect it. He wasn’t sure why he asked; it clearly was. It had been cleaned, though it still sported an ugly gash in the chest, the edges of the fabric frayed unevenly throughout the layers of protective material. Even the zipper had broken, based off of the fact that it had been entirely removed.
“Yeah,” Alex muttered. He plopped a small sewing kit down on the table and a little bundle of fabric and thread. “I, uh... I want to fix it up.”
Alex gets an outfit change as a new book in his story begins.

Summary
"There's more on your mind, isn't there? Come, sit."
So Alex did, but he couldn't really find anything to say. He hoped that Mr. Today would take control of the conversation, and luckily for him, he did.
"It's hard, losing a sibling the way you did. Having them live on, and hate you. Are you doing alright?"
Alex misses Aaron. Maybe it's a tale as old as time. Maybe it's all just inevitable. Who's to say? Alex misses Aaron. It doesn't get any easier.

Summary
“I just wanted to report that my classes have been...” He looked away, pressing his lips into a thin line as he tried to find the right word. “Sufficient.” He bowed again, deeper this time. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to advance ahead of my peers. May Quill prevail when the strong survive.”
“May Quill prevail,” Aaron echoed, then frowned slightly. “Sufficient? Not...good?”
Henry's blue eyes went wide. Good heavens, he looked like his father. Aaron tried not to think about the way Gunnar Haluki had stared at the gun in his hands. “I apologize. I didn’t mean to make them seem worse than they actually are.” He cleared his throat quickly. “The classes are very informative. I’m learning many things. The nurses are very skilled at explaining the workings of the body. You wanted me to report to you so you could make sure it was enough for me to handle. And...it is.”
In a world where Henry was not declared Unwanted and instead pledged his allegiance to the new High Priest Aaron Stowe, he checks in about the advanced University courses that he has been taking.

Summary
“This is going to sound like a really odd question, but it’s been eating away at me. Um…" He blinked a few times, not making eye contact. “Do you blame me? For your husband’s death, I mean."
“What?”
It was like some unspoken, unseen dam had burst, and now the words flooded out all at once. “It’s my fault Artimé was discovered in the first place. Everyone knows it. If I hadn’t gotten too ambitious, if I hadn’t given my stupid brother another stupid chance, Artimé would still be here and we’d all still be happy and he would still be alive, right?” He was shaking now. “I just… I wanted to know if you blamed me for it. It’s okay if you do.”
With Artimé gone and the death of Carina's husband weighing heavily on their minds, Alex and Carina have a seaside dicussion.

Summary
He took a deep breath, trying to steel himself for what was to come, and then wrapped his hand around the doorknob, turning it with a slow click and pushing it open slowly.
Sean wasn't certain what to expect; a ghost jumping out at him, his sister calling out to him? He was met with an eerie stillness and nothing more than dead shadows.
Luckily for him, the lights slowly turned on as he walked in. He glanced around at the walls, taking it all in. He hadn’t gone into Meghan’s room much during her time here, since the two preferred to spend their days chatting in the lounge with Earl or hanging out on the beach and lawn, but it wasn’t his first time in here, either. It looked no different than it had before.
After Meghan's death, Sean cleans out her closet.

Summary
"The girl's irises were a deep golden orange—like a marigold thrust into the sunset, a color Alex had tried dozens of times to perfect."
— The Unwanteds: Island of Silence - Lisa McMannAlex had to get this right. The eyes were the window to the soul, the marigolds held in her hand were the focal point of the piece, and this color—this vivid, striking, breathtaking, devastating color—was vital to capturing the whole point of the painting in the first place.
Alex tries to capture a color in a moment before it passes.

“Could you, uh...cut my hair?”
Alex stared at him a little blankly, taken aback by the simplicity of the request. He figured it would’ve been something to do with Quill, or giving Aaron permission to use certain spell components. Not something so...mundane.
It was still weird, having Aaron around for the mundane things.
Aaron's hair is getting too long.

Summary
The silence stretched between them, an unfathomable gap of emptiness. He could fall into it, if he really wanted to. He could claw at the edges, beg for her to take him back and forgive him for all the things he’d done and hold him tight and never let him go again. The distance might swallow him, though.
Alex didn’t say that he was sorry to hear it. He wasn’t, really.
His mother broke the silence first. “Alexander—”
Now that his mother is in Artimé, Alex has to think about his relationship with the woman who let him die.

Summary
Alex knew he had no room to speak, so he tried to stay silent, but the situation only grew stranger by the second. His mother, bowing? Thanking the ruler of the sea? It was such a bizarre sight that he felt like he couldn't properly comprehend it.
He quietly muttered, "Do you two know each other?"
His mother shot him a rather familiar look, and that shut him up.
When Pan comes to collect Alex for a favor, the head mage discovers yet another mystery about his mother.
