“Your family’s nice,” Dan says quietly.
“Dan, are you okay?” Phil asks, “Your heart’s pounding.”
“Yeah. Yeah. I’m okay.” How can Dan explain that he isn’t just okay? He’s so much better. “Thanks for having me.”
Phil’s answer is quiet with exhaustion and muffled by Dan’s chest, but Dan hears him loud and clear.

In 2009, certified loverboy Dan Howell crosses the country to spend Christmas with his boyfriend of two months and his family. He discovers that the Lester family handles the holidays differently than Dan's family does.
In 2025, Dan and Phil invite their families to spend Christmas in the house they built.

Summary
Before Dan goes to Wokingham to reunite with his high school friend group, he panics, and practically begs Phil to join him. He's anticipating that the weekend will be awkward and heavy, but at least this way, he won't be alone. He'll have Phil by his side to make him laugh and feel safe, so realistically, how bad could things get?
And then, the funniest thing happens. They both have a wonderful time.
Dan has a hard time being normal about it all. Luckily, no one is really asking him to be.
