Summary
As the boy vanished from sight, Hiacynt leaned back against the bench and lifted his gaze toward the dusky sky, where clouds had begun turning gold beneath the setting sun.
The thought settled heavily in his chest because Hiacynt knew exactly where that road led. He had walked it himself, followed it all the way to its end, and he wondered with a sadness so deep it felt ancient whether he had been brought back for people like that; people who believed they were beyond saving, who carried so much pain that one day they would do exactly what he had done.
People with no hope for salvation.
Staring at the fading sky, Hiacynt wondered if he was meant to save them; save them before they reached the edge, save them before they made the same choice he had, save them so they would never have to discover whether this life was a second chance, a punishment, or something far more cruel.
