Summary
"Hey," Conrad murmured.
He reached out, his hand instantly finding the small of Belly's back, his thumb rubbing a soothing circle through her sundress. "You look incredible."
"Hmmm," Belly said, her spatula hovering mid-air like a weapon. "Why do you look like you just committed a white-collar crime?"
He sighed, "Don't scream."
"That is the worst possible opening line. What did you do?"
"I forgot the bouncy house," he whispered.
Belly froze. The spatula slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the cutting board with a dull, tragic thud.
"YOU WHAT?!"
Conrad forgets to order the one thing his son requested for his 5th birthday; a bouncy house.

Summary
"Grandma?" Jamie asked, looking up from the shell.
"Yes, bean?" Laurel stands up from where she was sitting; playing with Abigail and Penelope in the sand.
"Daddy said the ocean is so big, but the shells will keep you safe," Jamie said softly. "Did he learn that from the lady in the picture by Mommy and Daddy’s bed?"
Laurel’s heart gave a tender, familiar ache. She knew the picture he meant; the one of Susannah, radiant and laughing in a straw hat.
"He did," Laurel smiled gently, her eyes drifting out toward the fading horizon where the pink and orange clouds met the sea. "He learned that from his mommy. Your Grandma Susannah."

Summary
"Being nervous just means you care, and that’s a good thing. It means you’re alive," Conrad said, his eyes filled with absolute certainty. "But once you step across that white line onto the field, the noise doesn't matter. You know exactly what to do. Your legs know what to do. Your hands know what to do. Just trust the work we put in."
Jamie swallowed hard, his shoulders loosening just a fraction. "Even if I miss?"
"Even if you miss three times in a row," Conrad said without a second of hesitation. "You're still the kid who went yard yesterday. And no matter what happens on that scoreboard, your mom, your sister, and I are going to be right here. I’m incredibly proud of you, slugger. You ready?"
Jamie looked out at the diamond, then back at his dad. A small, brave smile finally broke through the nerves. He nodded, much more confidently this time. "Yeah. I'm ready."
"Good." Conrad gave him a firm high-five that echoed inside the dugout, then clapped him on the back as Jamie stood up. "Go grab your bat. Let’s show them how it’s done."
Or: 7-year-old Jamie plays his first baseball game.

Four days before his birthday, they surprised him with tickets to the Annual Insect Convention.
(The author is usually immune to loud noises, but if you guys could only hear how loud Jamie screamed, you would have covered your ears too.)

Summary
This is a disaster," Belly lamented, her voice echoing from the kitchen as she slammed a cabinet door shut. "A literal disaster. Mom specifically said we have to have Korean food tonight because it’s Ines’s field day tomorrow!”
"Can't we just... use a normal metal pot?" Jamie called out weakly, casting a desperate glance at his dad.
Belly emerged from the kitchen, a wooden spoon held aloft. “No! She says the pot will help retain the nutrients we need for tomorrow! Your Dad is playing basketball, for Christ’s sake! And do you want me to lose tug-of-war? In front of Vanessa? Absolutely not.”
Ines, who is now eight years old and currently sitting at the dining table, trying to paint her nails with red nail polish, looked up. "We cannot lose tug-of-war, Mom. That’s gonna be sooo embarrassing.”
“I know, honey. Of course we will win.” Belly said, her eyes still scanning the room, “As soon as I find this pot.”
Lesson is: When an asian woman says her clay pot is very important, it is VERY important.
