Summary
It would’ve been easier if Ilya had taken his hand outside and allowed for the potent sedative on Shane’s glove to absorb through his skin, out there in the secluded, concrete garden of the estate. The drug would’ve taken him before he realized it, and he would’ve been a lot calmer. But to his own surprise, Shane found that he didn’t mind the brief moment when his dark eyes met Ilya’s panic-filled ones just before Ilya was visibly overtaken by drowsiness and his legs buckled. Maybe it was the moment of peace that had immediately washed over him that negated the fear Shane saw. Maybe it was something else, but now – with the Russian limp in his seat, his body lolling forward until his head rested on Shane’s shoulder as he succumbed to drug-induced slumber – was hardly the time to ponder it.

Summary
It was silly of Shane, really, to leave Ilya alone, an ocean away from him, with countless responsibilities, and expect him to take care of himself. It was silly of Shane to expect Ilya to understand the real reason he was marrying Rose Landry. It was silly of Shane to expect Ilya to stay true to their deal and return to him. Those were reasonable expectations of a mafia leader, sure, but Ilya was never really meant to lead a mob. He was meant to be Shane's pet, and even though he'd recently forgotten, the youngest Hollander was a patient man and was determined to teach his dog new tricks.
