It’s a similar position as their first kiss, pressed up against the lockers, this time with Jalen’s back against the metal. He’s about to slam their mouths together when Josh puts a finger to his lips.
“I think I get it now.”
Jalen’s forehead creases. He considers taking Josh’s finger into his mouth, sucking it. “Get what?”
“I’m the thing you want when you hate yourself.”

“On the house,” the waiter says, accent thick, placing a silver bowl of chocolate gelato between them. Cherry nestled on top, two tiny spoons tucked in. “For the lovely couple.”
Josh snorts into his fist. He peers at Jalen, waiting for the wild shake of his head, for his look of disgust, for redness to flood his face.
But all he gets is Jalen’s small nod to the waiter and a pleasant, “Grazie.”
And it could be the three glasses of wine, or the blaring sun, but Josh sees it then, could swear it to be true.
Jalen is smiling, and it feels like a punch to the face.(or, Jalen and Josh take a trip to Italy after their championship win and nothing changes until it all does.)
