Summary
There's something Grace hasn't told Rocky. And this isn't something that wouldn't pertain to their given situation, like his favorite breakfast cereal or the fact that he used to ride a bike to work (trying to explain a bicycle to a guy with five legs, yeah that would go swell), it happens to be a very important part of humans basic biology that affects all his phisiological processes. Humans have a lovely secondary sex component, designations, that allow for the existence of alphas, betas, and omegas. Yay so fun!
The problem is that ever since waking up alone on the Hail Mary, Ryland has not caught even a little of his scent or felt any urges that would signify if he was due. That means at some point on this journey from here to Erid that they’re on, he eventually will be. No way around it. To spring this on Rocky without prior knowledge, and become even more clumsy and cranky while also unbearably horny, would be bad. He could die, he could freak out, he could ostracize his only friend (and the guy he's kind of fell in love with) . . . all equally bad options he'd say. So it'd be nice if his body would get with the program and give him a sign. Did he mention he has no idea what designation he is?

“I’m not . . “ Grace trails off as he swallows trying to lubricate his throat. “normal. I’m too hard.”
“Everyone’s worth trying for. If facilities aren’t for you and you want to go back to your schedule at home, there’s nothing stopping you. But places like this are somewhat for your benefit and please believe me when I say no one is turned away no matter how difficult. You’d be a great case study actually Mr. Grace, oh sorry right . . no names.”
“It’s okay,” Grace lets out quietly. “I’m okay now.”
“Oh!” Christie lights up a little appreciating the correction from the delta. “Dr. Grace then. I read more of your file.”
Ryland snorts at that and can’t help but crack a smile through all the pain. “A doctor now a lab rat.”
Ryland Grace has been at an omega designation for a good few years now, even as a delta. With this stability comes a regular schedule of heats. He tends to manage them alone, simply taking the time off from teaching and holing up in his apartment. He doesn't have anyone to help him, not any friends and certainly no family. And the thought of trying out a partner again makes him shudder.

“I, uh god,” Ryland starts wiping away the tear streaks and rubbing his eyes, trying to dry his dripping wet eyelashes, “I’m definitely stupid that’s for sure. But I can blame it a little on hormones, can’t I? Give me a pass.”
“Okay.”
Oh how his mate obliges him.“You weren’t supposed to just agree, Rock.”
“Why? Human thing again?”
Grace snorts, “maybe. Or maybe just a me thing. I don’t like to blame my behavior on the chemicals inside of me. Even when they’re hyperactive.”
He can’t help but flex his shoulders as he feels the gnaw again. It’s very quiet but its existence reminds him that he is in fact switching designations right now and not hallucinating the feeling.
“I like to own what I say and do. It’s all I have.”“Have me.”
Another new experience for Grace and Rocky to have together.
