It will only last until tomorrow, he remembers with difficulty, dazed, fighting back the urge to hold onto Phainon, cling and never let go. It will only last a day. He should know better. One day is enough for kingdoms to fall.

Summary
You always believed in the existence of worlds hidden beyond the skies, of many more planets and galaxies to explore, your eyes full of unnamed moons even while your mouth tried and failed to convince the ignorants surrounding you of their existence. It was all a little difficult, for minds restricted for years within the confines of Okhema’s walls, to conjure the idea of something as vast as infinity. Still, you drew maps on sandy parchments and witnessed seas of stars in the darkness behind your closed eyelids, unable to accept it all to be so hard to believe.
What was unbelievable, however, was this: walking in on the crowned prince of Kremnos and the famed Deliverer getting it on in an alleyway, barely hidden by the shade thrown from the fabrics linking the rooftops together.

“Mydei,” Hephaestion starts. “My love? Can we talk?”
“Yes?” Mydei looks up from his recipe book, bright golden eyes free of any concern. Hephaestion hates the discussion they’re about to have already. He steels himself with a deep breath, smiles with as much affection (a lot) and self-confidence (very little) as he can, and says words he never ever thought would go past his lips:
“Your pet- chimera— thing. I think it's trying to kill me.”
Mydeimos looks down at the chimera quietly napping on his lap, a fluffy ball of blue and white wool rocking with its own peaceful snores. Then, back to Hephaestion, one eyebrow raised in utter disbelief.
“Phainon?”

The strangest of them all is the boy. The one who talks to him like they’re friends, like they’re close, with an always-ready smile and an easygoing attitude. Phai-non. It rolls off the tongue oddly when Mydei pronounces it, his accent thicker and unlike theirs, and he wonders how jarring it must sound to others, so he says it once, to himself, clumsily, twice— still wrong, and he decides angrily that he won’t ever say it again.

“Are you certain this isn't one of Cifera’s tricks?” Phainon ponders, tilting his head in curiosity, and some disgust at the thought that it could be the demigod of trickery blatantly making out with Mydei in his stead. “He and I really do look identical.”
Mydei’s fingers hook beneath Khaslana’s choker and pull him close again, their lips meeting, and Khaslana moves as if pulled by strings; angling his head at the angle he knows Mydei likes best. He licks Mydei’s lower lip between each kiss and moaning softly when Mydei reciprocates, an easy admittance of submission. When Mydei retreats Khaslana is left staring at him like a starving man, already looming closer for another taste. Mydei cocks his head barely out of reach, and smiles at him, then at Phainon.
“No, not identical,” he says. “He could teach you a few things.”

Pretty. Phainon clears his throat. Maybe his work would be a lot easier if his insanely attractive, older than him, single boss wasn’t such a flirt. He finds Mydei’s eyes, remembering Cipher’s wise advice. You miss all the shots you don’t take. “If it’s experience, I’m missing,” he starts, shame fueling his nonsense, “then I can learn—right? You could teach me.”
Mydei’s eyes glimmer with interest.
“Teach you,” he repeats, blatantly checking out Phainon. “I suppose I could.”

Mydei’s smile is bittersweet. “So you still remember my name.”
Phainon shoves him harder against the door, lips parted on short breaths, and Mydei thinks he will cave; will kiss. Phainon’s gaze goes from Mydei’s mouth to the tattoo printed under his eyes, then roams lower, down his throat, exposed by the now wrinkled collar, finding a fading dark red spot etched into the side of Mydei’s neck. A trace left by someone else. Phainon clutches tighter, and Mydei feels the weight of steel pressing against his skin. A ring. It shines brightly, brand-new silver and religious vows of after ever competing against the messy hickey some stranger left on him. Trading blows.
“I wish I could forget,” Phainon murmurs.

One of Phainon's palms unscrews, going to Mydei’s waist instead, then roaming up against his back to find the tenth vertebrae. When he touches it, Mydei makes a sound that’s halfway between a moan and a pained sob; his thighs twitch, and his nails dig into Phainon’s wrist, so Phainon rakes his fingertips across Mydei’s spine in punishment, thinking of gouging each bone out one by one. Pretty pearls he’d eat like roe.
