Summary
These are the things Paxton remembers:
Darkness.
Pain.
Longing, faint as a final breath, to be able to go back to the start. To stumble off that train. To meet Taunie and Naveen and Lida and Totodile. To go back to that rooftop, staring out over the constellations of the city, safety and contentment and hope burning so bright in his chest that they spilled out from under his skin to warm the night air and make his friends smile.
And a sound, distant but all-consuming, like the roaring of a far-off forest fire.
—
He woke up.
And when he put a hand to the rooftop below to push himself upright, it came away covered in ash.

“Yer gonna fuck up your body that way, y’know. Ever think of loppin’ ‘em off?”
There was the runt from the alley, standing near the door with his hands in his pockets, in a suit that was just a little too big for him. His eyes shone in the dim light.
“The fuck is that supposed to mean?”
The kid nodded at Philippe’s chest. Philippe forced his shoulders back, and his wings rose of their own volition.
“Don’t recall asking for your opinion.”
The kid tilted his head, then shrugged.
“Whatever. That’s not what I came here to talk about.”
Philippe scoffed. Talk? After all the shit this pipsqueak had pulled?
“Oh, are we talking now?”
“Ain’t we?”
