   Summary

These are the things Paxton remembers:

   Darkness.

   Pain.

Longing, faint as a final breath, to be able to go back to the start. To stumble off that train. To meet Taunie and Naveen and Lida and Totodile. To go back to that rooftop, staring out over the constellations of the city, safety and contentment and hope burning so bright in his chest that they spilled out from under his skin to warm the night air and make his friends smile.

And a sound, distant but all-consuming, like the roaring of a far-off forest fire.

   —

   He woke up.

And when he put a hand to the rooftop below to push himself upright, it came away covered in ash.
