"That's it? That's my punishment?"
"Would you like a different punishment?"
Levi bites back a tsk sound, making a show of crossing his arms and staring out of the window. There are students milling about below, shoving each other and chatting. Some have bicycles and fancier clothes than Levi's ever seen before. They seem so carefree. He wonders what it's like not to have to worry about anything other than what clothes to wear today or how much to study for a test.
or: Levi lives in the slums with his good-for-nothing uncle. Once he gets the chance to go to high school on the outside, his homeroom and history teacher, Erwin Smith, makes him feel safe in a world in which he never feels safe.

"No," Hange says. "You don't seem like the type to enjoy going on dates."
Levi lets out a relieved sigh. "I don't like meeting new people."
"Dates aren't the only way to get a boyfriend, though," Hange says, with a glint in their eyes as they tilt their head up at Levi.
"I'm not interested in—"
"Boys?"
"No."
"Girls?"
"No."
"Erwin?"
Levi snaps his mouth shut.
