He had put his foot in his mouth plenty of times around Eva Stratt, and she still held him in some kind esteem. She made him feel something he hadn't felt very often in his life. It was how he felt about the Astrophage and Project Hail Mary: like having a direction, as if his internal compass were waking up and showing him his North Star.
That scared him because it always prefaced the destruction of something that gave Ryland Grace a purpose.
Eva Stratt gave him a purpose. And he overthought himself into a position that truly must be the worst of all.

Since Reader is going to be slightly a self-insert of myself, I'm making her Christian. Not the holier than though type but the kind that just follow the Bible plain and simply.
