“I’m not saying she’s scary,” Yoichi says. “I’m saying she makes me feel weird.”
Zen goes still. Does he— Does Yoichi feel the way he does? Is Zen not the only one like this, not the only one who feels the strangeness whenever he sees the magazine women? And if Yoichi feels it too, maybe everyone does. Maybe everyone his age has come across magazines like they have, and they’re just better at hiding it than he is, or maybe he just never noticed, because he’s so wrapped up in the magazines himself and—
No. He has to check first.
“Weird?” he echoes. “What kind of weird?”
“Like… uncomfortable. Or dirty. She lives in the back of my brain, and I can’t get her out.”
Zen nods. Uncomfortable is a good word for it. Really good, actually.
“I feel like that, too,” he says.
Or: When Zen discovers the magazines under his mother's bed as a child, he decides they don't affect him. (He's wrong about that.)
