Before continuing, ask any stable person "Should I read?" and they will tell you to put this down and read something more pleasant instead. If you wanted a story with a happy ending, you would better off reading something else, for the tale of the Baudelaires and Quagmires is dreadful, melancholy and calamitous a word which here means 'dreadful and melancholy'. There are no happy endings here. Not only that, but there are also no happy beginnings and very few happy middles. My name is Lemony Snicket, and it is my solemn duty to document the sorry lives of these poor children.

Summary
My name is Lemony Snicket and it is my solemn duty to document the story of these poor orphans.
Lousy Lane is, in some ways, comparable to the sad lives of the Baudelaires and Quagmires. Many times, throughout my research into their lives, I felt myself grow sick at the thought of their troubles much like the sour apples of the lane. And much like the strong smell of the factory wards people away from the road, I hope this message will persuade you to put this story away and read something that will end with everyone alive, for this story does not. I hope, if you choose to continue, you do it with the knowledge that the lives of these children are a lot, lot worse than any trip down Lousy Lane could ever be.
