Summary
Instead of a kiss, Jack simply extended a hand, offering a firm, practiced handshake, the only physical touch the world would allow them. Robby pulled his hand from his pocket and took it. Their fingers locked together, gripping tight, a sharp, unspoken pressure passing between them that said everything their lips couldn't.
Before either of them could break, Jack let go.
Behind them, the bus doors hissed open, the driver calling out the final call.
Jack adjusted the strap of his duffel bag, turned toward the open door, and hauled himself up the steep metal steps. He didn't look back as he walked down the narrow aisle, settling into a worn vinyl seat by the window. As the bus lurched forward and pulled out into the gray morning light, Jack pressed his hand flat against the cold glass, staring out at Robby’s standing silhouette in the parking lot, watching the only boy he had ever loved disappear into the distance.
or
